Rif010: The ultimate test. A complete review.
11 October 2024
As seasoned surfers with a lot of experience worldwide, we decided to test RiF010, the world's first urban surf pool. We didn't know exactly what to expect from surfing in a city canal, but that only made it more exciting. Here's our in-depth test of the waves, the boards, and the experience as a whole.
Arrival: The City vs. the Ocean
Surfing in the middle of a city – that takes some getting used to. When we arrived at RiF010, we had to rub our eyes. You literally walk with your boards through the center of Rotterdam, towards a canal where the waves are waiting for you. It feels unreal, but as soon as you see the pool, you realize that this is no joke. This is surfing at its most urban.
Doubts: which board for Rif010?
At first we were in doubt about which board to take to Rotterdam. A wave pool usually has powerful, predictable waves, but the choice of your board can still make a difference. In the end it turned out that you don't need extra volume for the Expert waves of 1.5 meters. The waves are powerful enough to easily paddle in with a standard shortboard.
For the beginner sessions (1 meter) or the intermediate sessions (1.3 meters) extra volume can be useful. Those waves have less power, and a board with more volume helps you to gain speed and get into the wave more easily.
T-man went for his Retro Twinny Jed Noll and Jokke for his Firewire Unibrow 6'0 19 3/4 2 5/8 – both perfect for the waves we caught that day.
Rif010 Expert session (1.5 meters)
Our first session was the Expert session with waves of 1.5 meters. And that was an instant hit. The waves were powerful, consistent and gave us the opportunity to make some deep turns. It felt just like being in the ocean, but with the advantage that every wave was exactly the same.
The power of these waves made it easy to paddle in, without needing an extra big board. It was a great session to practice some sharp turns, and we found that the consistent quality of the waves really gave us the chance to focus on technique.
Rif010 Expert barrel session (1.6 meters)
Next we tried the 1.6m Expert Barrel session. The take-off was stronger than the 1.5m session, but the barrel itself was unfortunately too small for us – partly because we are simply not flexible enough to squeeze into such a small space anymore.
The first wave of each set was good, but the further you got into the set the more the quality of the waves decreased. The backwash had a big effect on the waves later in the set, making it difficult to get that perfect ride. For us it was clear that the 1.5m Expert session was the better choice for a consistent and enjoyable surfing experience.

Facilities and relaxation
After the sessions it was time to relax in the surf bar, where you have a perfect view of the pool from the terrace. The warm showers were a welcome end to an intensive surf session. What makes RiF010 really special is that you are in the center of Rotterdam, but still have the feeling that you are in the middle of a surf paradise.
Our Rif010 conclusion: You have to experience RiF010 yourself
After two sessions in the waves of RiF010 in Rotterdam we can say with certainty that this is a place that every surfer should experience. The consistency and power of the waves, combined with the urban setting, makes this a unique surfing experience. For us as experienced surfers it offered the perfect challenge to sharpen our skills, especially in the 1.5 meter Expert session.
If you have the chance, we recommend going for the 1.5m session. The waves are powerful, predictable and ideal for making some solid turns. And who knows what the future holds, because RiF010 keeps working on improvements, and maybe that barrel session will be just that little bit better in the future.
